Colts Sign new Running Back Addai
Multiple Backs May Now Be Colts Approach, Polian and Dungy Say
INDIANAPOLIS – To hear Joseph Addai tell it, he’s not necessarily coming in to replace Edgerrin James.
He wants to contribute, he said this weekend.

He wants to play whatever role the team needs, he said.

Addai, the Colts’ first-round selection in the 2006 NFL Draft and a running back from Louisiana State University, was doing more than saying what he believed he was supposed to say in the wake of joining a new team.

He may have been providing a glimpse into the Colts’ new approach at his position.

A go-to, full-time running back?

One back getting 90 or 95 percent of the carries?

That’s how it has been for more than a decade with the Colts, but that may not be the best approach anymore, Colts President Bill Polian and Head Coach Tony Dungy said over the weekend. The Colts’ future at the position may be a committee approach that has become increasingly common around the league, Polian and Dungy each said.

“It’s a two-man position in virtually every other city,” Polian said shortly after this past weekend’s draft, in which the Colts made Addai the No. 30 overall selection in the first round. “We see this as a two-man position right now.”

The most likely scenario for the Colts at running back, Polian said, is a combination of Addai and veteran Dominic Rhodes, with veteran James Mungro also contributing.

HB- Edgerrin James- No.32
The biggest move of the fantasy football offseason was made official on Sunday, as Edgerrin James signed a four-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals. The switch to a new team obviously alters James' value for the 2006 season, while opening up a starting slot in Indianapolis.

Immediately, the question arises: Can James continue to be an elite running back on a team that has been an annual source of disappointing rushing numbers? The Cardinals haven't had a 1,000-yard rusher since 1998, and only three of their RBs have surpassed the century mark since the team moved to Arizona in 1988. Last year, Arizona ranked last in the NFL in rushing, and an injury-riddled and ineffective offensive line used 11 different starters and six different starting combinations overall
